Baltimore County announced on Apr. 2 that it has started construction on a new Jacksonville Senior Center, aiming to better serve the needs of its growing senior population.
The county said the project is important because it will provide more space and resources for older adults, helping them stay active and connected in their community.
The new center will replace the current facility with a building three times larger, allowing for expanded programming and improved accessibility. Officials said feedback from local residents, including over 1,500 active members of the existing center, influenced plans for a larger and more flexible space.
The project will cost $19 million and create a 17,000-square-foot facility expected to open in summer 2027. Features will include a multi-purpose room for meals and gatherings—including pickleball—a larger fitness room, game lounge, several classrooms, commercial kitchen, outdoor patio, and solar panels. The building is also being designed to meet LEED Silver sustainability standards.
County leaders say these upgrades reflect an ongoing effort to support healthy aging by providing spaces that encourage activity and social connection among seniors.
