The Coppin State baseball team lost to Towson, 14-7, on April 7 in the opening game of an eight-game homestand at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles now have a record of 5-22 for the season, while Towson improved to 14-15.
This result matters as it marks the start of a crucial stretch for Coppin State, with several home games that could influence their season standing.
Noah Hogan, Jordan Treadwell and Armando (AJ) Hurtado each drove in two runs for Coppin State. Hogan led the offense by going two-for-three with a run scored and two walks. Treadwell also drew two walks and tripled to left center in the third inning to score Marcus Sanders and Hogan. Sanders walked twice, scored twice and made notable defensive plays at third base.
Coppin State used five pitchers during the game. Mekenna Wakakuwa took the loss after pitching three innings with three strikeouts and allowing two earned runs on three hits. Brandon Stephens struck out three batters but gave up two runs over one-and-a-third innings. Keith Wallace and Edwin Sanchez were each charged with four earned runs before Jackson Montgomery threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Towson built an early lead with a four-run third inning before Coppin cut it to one run in their half of the frame. The Tigers added two more runs in the fifth inning, then broke open the game by scoring eight times in the seventh. The Eagles responded with three runs of their own that inning, including RBI from Terrell Milliner and Hogan.
Hurtado brought home another run for Coppin State in the ninth inning by drawing a bases-loaded walk.
Looking ahead, Coppin State will remain at home for seven more games, beginning with a three-game Northeast Conference series against Central Connecticut State from April 10 through April 12.
