Matt Morgan, a Maryland state legislator, posted a series of tweets in early January 2026 addressing issues ranging from the opioid crisis to political commentary on state leadership.
On January 4, 2026, Morgan highlighted the rise in overdose deaths over recent decades. He wrote, “When I graduated high school back in 1992, nationwide, fewer than 6,000 people died from overdoses in a year. By 2020, that number had skyrocketed to over 100,000 per year. That’s not just a statistic, that’s an epidemic tearing apart families and communities across our state and https://t.co/sZtlyWzTIG”.
The following day, on January 5, Morgan questioned government policy with another post: “why does it sound like government confiscation? https://t.co/MHFPjg7lDo”.
Later the same day, he expressed criticism of Democratic politicians in Maryland. In his tweet he stated: “Every day, I go back and forth on which Democrat politician is the biggest embarrassment to the state of Maryland. Unfortunately, there are so many to choose from. https://t.co/DFKmfwiuXX”.
Opioid overdose deaths have seen a dramatic increase in the United States since the early 1990s. According to CDC data and multiple public health sources, annual drug overdose deaths rose from under 10,000 in the early ’90s to surpassing 100,000 by 2020—a trend attributed to factors such as prescription opioid misuse and synthetic opioids like fentanyl.
Matt Morgan has served as a delegate representing St. Mary’s County in Maryland’s House of Delegates since first being elected in 2014.
