Anne Arundel County Board of Education Policy Committee met April 11.

Here is the minutes provided by the Committee:

The Board of Education Policy Committee met at 1:00 p.m. on the above date at the school system headquarters, 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis. Policy Committee Chair, Maria Sasso led the meeting. Other Board members present were Colin Reinhard, and Lusia Cole.

Staff members present were Jeanette Ortiz, Legislative and Policy Counsel; Sally Egan, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services; Jessica Cuches, Executive Director of Human Resources; Bob Mosier, Chief Communications Officer; Tyson Bennett, Board Counsel; Walter Federowicz, Director of Internal Audit; Jodi Risse, Supervisor of Food and Nutrition Services; Ryan Voegtlin, Director Of Student Services; Kellie Anderson, Coordinator of Psychological Services; and Molly Connolly, Executive Assistant to the Board.

Ms. Sasso opened the meeting with a review of the minutes of March 14, 2018. Mrs. Connolly and Mr. Bennett noted minor corrections to be made. The minutes were approved as amended by consensus.

The first policy under consideration was Confidential Communications: Reporting At Risk Student Behavior – Code GAD. Mrs. Ortiz noted that the changes to the policy were stylistic in nature. Stylistic changes were also made to the regulation. She also noted that many of the cross-outs in the regulation were due to cross-referencing with another policy. Mr. Federowicz commented on Section D.2 – Procedures/Suicidal Thoughts and Gestures, and asked when the continuous adult supervision of a child will end. It was agreed that language will be added to include that supervision will end when the risk assessment is complete and a decision is made as to next steps for the student. Kellie Anderson provided additional information as to steps to be taken once the student returns to school. There were no further questions.

The second policy under consideration was Staff Wellness, Code GAII. There were no questions on Policy GAII or Regulation GAII-RA.

Regulation GAII-RAA – Healthy Meetings and Events was the last item of discussion. Ms. Ortiz noted that additional language was added to the regulation under C. Procedures to elaborate on how AACPS schools and offices will encourage the inclusion of healthy foods, healthy beverages and physical activities in students’ lives. Language was also added to include the utilization of the Wellness Toolkit.

Adjourn: 2:20 p.m.
