Anne Arundel County issued the following announcement on June 13.
County Executive Steve Schuh today called on the Anne Arundel County Council to pass his proposed $1.5 million property tax cut.
“Tax relief is important as we work to make our County the best in Maryland,” said Schuh. “I ask the Council to help add to the $110 million in tax and fee relief we have already brought to working families and businesses over the last four years.”
Under the proposal, homeowners would see their property tax rate lowered to $0.902, which would be $0.002 under the $0.904 projected property tax cap. Public safety employees who live in the County would also be able to obtain a $2,500 credit on their property taxes.
Over the past three years, the Schuh Administration has enacted more than $110 million in tax and fee relief including: the largest tax cut in County history, the largest fee cut in County history, and reduced or eliminated nine taxes and fees. For four straight years, the County Executive has proposed reducing taxes and fees.
In November, the County Council passed Resolution 47-17, which called for a cut in the property tax rate below the formula driven property tax cap. Councilman Derek Fink, Michael Peroutka, John Grasso, Jerry Walker and Pete Smith all voted for the resolution. County Councilman Derek Fink, R-Pasadena, proposed the resolution.
Schuh also commended the County Council for working to find additional funding to add teachers to the school system.
“As our Administration has said since presenting our budget in May, our school system needs more teachers,” said Schuh. “Working together we have already added at least 275 educators to our system over the last four years. These actions of the Council will help grow that number even further.”
The County’s budget plan and tax rate will be finalized on June 14th.
