Anne Arundel County Public Schools issued the following announcement on July 5.
Joining with newsrooms around the country as well as government and other offices in our county, Anne Arundel County Public Schools will observe a moment of silence today in memory of the victims of last week’s shooting at the Capital Gazette offices.
The observance, which will also honor those who continue the paper’s work and mission as well as the heroic first responders who raced to the scene, will occur at 2:33 p.m., the exact minute that police say the gunman began shooting at the newspaper offices. Five people – Editorial Writer Gerald Fischman, Editor Rob Hiaasen, Sportswriter and Reporter John McNamara, Sales Assistant Rebecca Smith, and Reporter and Editor Wendi Winters – were killed in the attack.
“The heartache inflicted by a lone gunman one week ago is something that our community has not had to previously endure,” Superintendent George Arlotto said. “Capital Gazette has been a vital part of the fabric of Anne Arundel County since 1727, and it is very important that we, as a county family, continue to rally around them in their time of grief and need. Today, we will remember the precious lives that were lost, honor those who bravely continue to produce quality journalism, and send a clear message that we stand united in support of our community’s newspaper.”
