Anne Arundel County issued the following announcement on Sept. 20.

Keeping with his commitment to improve the quality of life of county residents, Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh today broke ground on the $1.7 million Brooklyn Park Senior Center revitalization.

“The flagship of our senior center network lays here at the Brooklyn Park Senior Center.,” said Schuh. “This revitalization and refurbishment will improve the quality of life for our seniors.”

The project includes essential upgrades like an additional activity room to accommodate more classes and installing a vestibule to put reception and check/in in a separate room than the main lobby area.

The Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center started in the basement of the Brooklyn Park Library with only a few participants. As the membership grew, so did the need for additional space. In 2000, in partnership with the Brooklyn Park Middle School, the doors of the current location were opened.

The first senior center located within a campus setting, the Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center is attached to the Brooklyn Park Middle School on the opposite side of the campus from the Chesapeake Arts Center. Located in northernmost Anne Arundel County, the center serves not only the Brooklyn Park community, but is also home to some very popular cultural events.

The project was made possible through the JumpStart Anne Arundel capital project financing program. Enacted in 2015, the capital plan embraces a 30-year bond financing option. This reform has allowed Anne Arundel County to expand its capital funding program and make critical school, public safety, road, and quality of life infrastructure improvements from Brooklyn Park to Pasadena to Annapolis to Odenton.
