Broadneck High School issued the following announcement on Oct. 9.
After 32 years at the helm of our boy’s lacrosse program Coach Clay White announced his plans to retire from both coaching and teaching at the conclusion the school year.
During Mr. White’s tenure Broadneck established itself as a perennial lacrosse power winning 5 State Championship! During his 43-year coaching career Coach White won over 450 games and posted only one losing season in 32 years as head coach at Broadneck.
Thank you Coach White for all that you have meant to generations of Broadneck students, athletes, faculty and friends.

I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work with and get to know Coach White over the last few years. His passion and energy are both obvious and contagious. Clay’s impact on our entire school community cannot be measured solely through wins and losses – his impact is, in fact, felt by all who watch him interact with his former players and their families. Coach White’s ability to teach impressionable boys how to become men of outstanding character through athletics is something that we all admire.
I would like to congratulate Coach Clay White on an outstanding career and wish him well in his future endeavors. We will certainly miss him!

Clay White’s departure marks the end of an era at Broadneck. His record as our lacrosse coach speaks for itself but it will be his lasting impact on our student-athletes that will be most missed. Mr. White was more than a coach to our athletes, he was a mentor, a confidant, and a friend. His special relationship with student athletes was the cornerstone to his coaching. Coach White truly cared about his players as people and developed lifelong relationships with many of his former players. Many of Coach White’s players returned to coach with him at BHS and others went on to be successful coaches at the collegiate level. In addition to lacrosse, Coach White also served as head coach of our Allied Bowling program for many years. Coach White brought a great level of enthusiasm, passion and caring to our special needs student athletes. Mr. Whites departure will leave a tremendous void in our school and community.

Broadneck High School,
I would like to thank our school, staff, alumni and community who have helped to make our school one of the best in Maryland. It has been a privilege, honor, and dream to teach here for nineteen years and coach for thirty-three years. It will be my 43rd year coaching and over 40 years teaching. In June 2019 I will be retiring from teaching and coaching.
I owe everything to all our Principals, Athletic Directors, coaching staff and peers who have supported me all these years. Broadneck has always been about what is best for the students and community. We have had many firsts, the field house, field turf and Boosters Club and Ken Kaczmarek has lead the charge in all three. Kaz has been the longest tenured AD in Anne Arundel County and has kept our school history alive. Our great traditions were established by Lawrence Knight, our first Principal, Tim McMullen, our first AD, and Bruce Villwock, our first head football and lacrosse coach. A special thanks to Lynn Blackman for hiring me as a PE teacher nineteen years ago.
I am grateful for all the wonderful coaches I have had over the years, most recently J.P. Gourley, Brandon Rowe, Tim Berquist, Chappy Cole, Chris Norman, and Christian Jacobs. It has been a pleasure to work with them as well as Rick Gray, Adam Koch, Greg Eschleman, Jon Braun, Carl Behringer, Brien McMurray, Jeff Herrick, Don Sadler, Eric Holt, Jon Feldman, Joey Case, Mike Sinko, Greg Karanzalis, Andy Claxton, Jamie Roell, and Cameron Rowe. Their unconditional loyalty and love of the great game of lacrosse has been amazing to me and the players. The numerous hours they have put in for minimal pay or no pay is beyond belief.
I would like to thank coaches Mike Ballas, and Allan Pastrana who I played for at Anne Arundel Community College. They were terrific leaders and mentors. My role models in coaching and life have been Tim McMullen, Allan Segree, Rick Gray, and Bruce Lawton. They have been impactful in everything I have ever accomplished.
My second family has been my alumni who are outstanding people and who have made an old coach very proud over the years. Seeing them raise wonderful families as well as become pillars of the community is something I will cherish forever. I have been fortunate to coach several of my players’ sons and I cannot think of a greater honor. I have had great satisfaction watching our Alumni coach lacrosse at different levels.
I need to thank Allan and Edie Segree, Candy Mahler, the Cases, Carsons, Rowes, Nashs, Simpsons, Morihlatkos, Randolphs, Cunninghams, Otts, Jacobs, Svecs, Dunns, Poissons, and so many others for all their support. Please forgive the ‘old man’ because I know I have forgotten so many more. A special appreciation to Mike Ott and Stephanie Jones for restarting the Alumni games.
Teaching in our PE Department for the last nineteen years has been wonderful. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge them for always assisting me and covering my back. As a staff they have gone way beyond what should be expected, specifically my legendary computer skills. I will miss the department terribly because they are all outstanding teachers, coaches and parents. It is amazing the diversity of PE classes now offered which highlights the varied expertise of my coworkers. The PE staff, without a doubt, is the best our county has to offer.
I am overwhelmed by the dedication and work our lacrosse managers as well as the STAT girls, who played a major role in running practices and games. Their loyalty, friendship and work ethic has contributed to many great memories. You guys are the best.
One of Anne Arundel County’s great additions was starting Unified and Allied sports and I am proud to have been proud to have been the head bowling coach. Working with Liz Guidry, Jen Trout, Jill Delvisio, Arianna Dalton, Adam Koch, Candy and Jett Mahler, as well as the Ryans has brought me great pleasure. We have always had the largest bowling team in the county. Thanks to all the ACC students for all the great times, fun, genuine love of life.
Broadneck is a special place and will always be my extended family. Thanks for the memories. I will be holding a garage sale for all the maroon and grey attire I have accumulated through all these years.
