City of Annapolis issued the following announcement on Oct. 30.
Tonight, after sunset, the City of Annapolis will project an illumination of the Star of David in honor of the 11 people murdered at the Tree of Life Synagogue in the City of Pittsburgh. Mayor Gavin Buckley spoke with Mayor Bill Peduto last evening to extend his sympathies to the victims, their families and the survivors, as well as the rest of the city. The illumination will last for 11 nights – one night to honor each victim.
On Thursday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m., at 160 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, religious and civil rights leaders will gather with elected officials, candidates, and the public for a vigil in honor of the Tree of Life victims outside of City Hall, located at 160 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis.
The Mayor issued the following statement:
“Last evening, I spoke with Mayor Peduto to extend our city’s sympathy with the people of Pittsburgh, especially with the families of the 11 victims, as well as the survivors of the shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue. I told Mayor Peduto that we were honoring these victims of anti-semitic violence by projecting a Star of David on the façade of City Hall. I have also spoken with Jewish faith and civil rights leaders about ways we can honor the memories of these 11 innocent victims.
We ask that all citizens respect and honor these latest casualties of gun violence, as the world mourned the lives of Wendi Winters, Rob Hiassen, John McNamara, Gerald Fischman and Rebecca Smith after the shooting at The Capital Gazette office.
Mayor Peduto agrees that this unfortunate club we all belong to, mayors of towns and cities impacted by mass shootings, should work together to find reasonable solutions to end gun violence.
On November 19, during our City Council Meeting, we will honor the lives of the 11 victims with the lighting of candles and sharing of words of love, acceptance and peace in our communities. I hope our city can join us that evening.
As our residents and visitors drive past City Hall on Duke of Gloucester for the next several days, please keep these families in your thoughts and find ways to help make our communities stronger.”
