City of Annapolis Fire Department issued the following announcement on Nov. 2.
Annapolis Fire Department Reminds Residents to Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery®
Did you know that working smoke alarms doubles your chances of surviving a home fire?
Did you know that the peak time for home fire fatalities is between 11pm and 7am?
Did you know that “eighty percent of child fire fatalities occur in homes without working smoke alarms?”
Did you know that adults 75 and older are 2.8 times more likely to die in a home fire?
Annapolis Fire Chief David L. Stokes, Sr. wants to remind our residents that one simple step can help save the life of you and your family. Have working smoke alarms in your home! Friday, November 2, marks the 31st year of the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery® program sponsored by Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. The message is simple and the habit can be lifesaving when you change your clocks, test and change your batteries in your smoke, and carbon monoxide alarms. Remind friends, families, neighbors, and fellow community members to do the same.
Annapolis Fire Chief David Stokes says “Smoke alarm maintenance is a simple, effective way to reduce home fire deaths. Children and senior citizens are most at risk, and working smoke alarms can give them the early warning they need to get out safely.”
The fire department encourages all of our citizens to switch to the 10 year lithium battery smoke alarms. A 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms (sometimes called smoke detectors) offer a variety of benefits to the millions of Americans who rely on continuous battery-powered smoke and fire detection in their homes. The alarms are powered by sealed, long-life lithium batteries that will last for 10 years (the life of the alarm), meaning they are always on. The National Fire Protection Association recommends replacing smoke alarms every 10 years.
If you are an Annapolis City resident and do not have a working smoke alarm, the Annapolis Fire Department will be more than happy to visit your home and assess your smoke alarms. If it is determined that you will need a working alarm and cannot afford one, we will install a 10 year lithium battery smoke alarm for you free of charge. The Annapolis Fire Department also recommends that your home be equipped with ABC fire extinguishers. If your community, civic or business organization would like training in the proper use of fire extinguishers, contact the Office of the Fire Marshal at 410-260-2202.
