ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Board of Education to receive Superintendent George Arlotto recommendation on boundaries for Crofton Area High School

Hs 09

Anne Arundel County Public Schools issued the following announcement on Nov. 30.

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will receive a recommendation from Superintendent George Arlotto to create attendance boundaries for the new Crofton Area High School at its next meeting, scheduled for December 5, 2018.

A committee composed of representatives from nine potentially impacted schools was charged with examining possibilities with regard to formulating an attendance zone for the county’s first new high school in nearly 40 years. In recommending a plan to Dr. Arlotto for consideration, the committee also endorsed altering attendance boundaries for five elementary schools as well as Arundel and Crofton middle schools.

The Board will consider Dr. Arlotto’s recommendation and any other alternatives and decide which options to take to a public hearing later this year. Under Board policy, a redistricting plan must be adopted by April 30, 2019.

GLOBAL COMMUNITY CITIZENSHIP COURSE

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, the Board will hear a presentation on the expansion of the Global Community Citizenship Course, in place at Arundel High School for the last two years, to all county high schools. The course, which is designed to explore the values and diversity of our local, national, and global communities and foster acceptance and inclusion of all people, will be a graduation requirement for students beginning with those who are ninth-graders in the 2019-2020 school year.

The meeting will be the first for five Board members. Candace C.W. Antwine (Councilmanic District 1), Michelle Corkadel (Councilmanic District 7), Melissa Ellis (Councilmanic District 4), and Dana Schallheim (Councilmanic District 5) were elected to the Board in November. Robert C. Leib was appointed by the School Board Appointment Commission earlier this month to fill the vacant District 30 seat formerly held by Maria Delores Sasso.

The Board will meet in a public session at 8 a.m. for the sole purpose of voting to immediately go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The public session of the meeting will resume at 10 a.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. High definition broadcasts can be seen on Channel 996 on Comcast, Channel 496 on Broadstripe, and Channel 1961 on Verizon. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
