WASHINGTON, D.C. – On May 31, 2023, Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement after voting to uphold the creditworthiness of the United States and avert a devastating default on the national debt:

“Among the most critical responsibilities for lawmakers is to prevent a default on our national debt, which would send a dangerous shockwave across the global economy,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “The Bipartisan Budget Agreement avoids the extreme cuts House Republicans have been proposing for months -- cuts that would upend critical programs that millions of American families rely on. The agreement passed today pays our nation’s bills while protecting the historic progress we have made to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, create new good-paying jobs, boost American manufacturing and address the climate crisis.  To be sure, there are components of this bill which give me real concern and represent setbacks on a number of important policy fronts.  However, on balance, the bill protects critical investments that President Biden and Democrats have made over the last two years and I believe its passage is necessary to ensure the nation does not descend into an economic freefall.”
