Meeting 05

Anne Arundel County Board of Education Policy Committee met May 9.

Here is the agenda provided by the Committee:

The Board of Education Policy Committee met at 1:00 p.m. on the above date at the school system headquarters, 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis. Policy Committee Chair, Maria Sasso led the meeting. Other Board members present were Julie Hummer, Colin Reinhard, and Lusia Cole.

Staff members present were Jeanette Ortiz, Legislative and Policy Counsel; Bob Mosier, Chief Communications Officer; Tyson Bennett, Board Counsel; Walter Federowicz, Director of Internal Audit; Shannon Pugh, Manager of Academic Strategic Initiatives; and Molly Connolly, Executive Assistant to the Board.

Ms. Sasso opened the meeting with a review of the minutes of April 11, 2018. The minutes were approved by consensus.

The first policy under consideration was High School Courses Taken by Middle School Students – Code IIF. Ms. Ortiz noted that the policy is being revised so that it aligns with COMAR. Ms. Pugh answered Board questions about the ability of a middle school student to re-take a high school course once the student enters high school. Mr. Mosier suggested inserting some additional language into the policy for clarification. It was noted that any high school class taken by a student while in middle school is reported on the high school transcript. Ms. Ortiz and Ms. Pugh will review current language for high school students re-taking a course and will include the language in this policy, if warranted, before the policy comes to the Board for first reading on June 6, 2018.

Ms. Sasso addressed Policy DK – Financial Fraud, Waste and Abuse and its corresponding Regulation. She asked about the possibility of adding language to the regulation involving notification to the Office of Internal Audit on the outcome of any referrals made. Ms. Sasso also addressed the Grading, Transportation, and Public Participation Board policies as those she would like to come before the Policy Committee. Ms. Ortiz noted that she would send the aforementioned policies to committee members to review for future meetings.

Mr. Reinhard asked about policies that will need to be adopted as a result of new law. Ms. Ortiz advised that she is currently working on this list as well as other policies to be reviewed and adopted in the 2018-2019 school year.
