WASHINGTON, D.C. – On April 26, 2023, Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement after voting against the Default on America Act, legislation which threatens a default on existing debt obligations and cuts programs that help families and communities across the country:
“Defaulting on our debt would have a severe effect on the global economy,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “Yet House Republicans are saying they won't pay America's bills unless we implement drastic cuts that threaten medical care for veterans, jeopardize health coverage for 21 million Americans, slash food assistance and affordable housing, and undermine education and mental health care for students.
He continued, “Even President Trump voted to address the debt limit without conditions, honoring the tradition of using two different processes to uphold the creditworthiness of the United States and negotiate on budget priorities. After Congress acts to prevent default, we can have a separate and meaningful discussion about the budget.”
Finally, he said, “President Biden has laid out a plan to avoid this catastrophe, grow our economy, lower costs for families and cut the deficit by $3 trillion. I urge House Republicans to come to the table on this serious, necessary plan.”
