WASHINGTON, D.C. – On April 24, 2023, Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement in observance of the 108th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide:

"Today, we honor the memory of the 1.5 million innocent Armenians who were deported and massacred at the hands of Ottoman-era Turkish authorities.  For any and all who claim to know history and value humanity, there can be no equivocation when it comes to recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Learning from that history equips us to resist ruthless and oppressive regimes around the world and to stand strong in defense of human rights and religious freedom.”

Congressman Sarbanes is a cosponsor of the Armenian Genocide Education Act, legislation to enhance education and awareness about the Armenian Genocide. In 2021, he joined in passing legislation to formally recognize the Armenian Genocide and pushing President Biden to be the first president to issue such recognition.
