WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) on May 12, 2023 opposed legislation to effectively end asylum and all humanitarian protections for migrants and revive the extreme, failed immigration policies of the Trump Administration.
Among its most draconian provisions, the “Child Deportation Act” (H.R. 2) would expedite child deportation, detaining unaccompanied minors in Border Patrol facilities for a month or more and requiring a hearing without proper access to counsel before sending them back to dangerous situations.
“The United States is a diverse nation and a beacon of hope for those fleeing violence and persecution. With this bill, House Republicans have failed our values and overridden the public outcry against the atrocious treatment of migrants and asylum-seekers,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “Rather than working to develop a humane, fair immigration system, this legislation would eliminate legal pathways for asylum, hurt our economy and spend taxpayer funding on debunked border strategies.”
The “Child Deportation Act” is a top priority for Republicans in the 118th Congress. In addition to decimating the legal right to seek asylum and upending the protections currently in place for unaccompanied minors, this legislation would:
- Restart construction of an extensive and failed border wall;
- Require that all migrants seeking admission without a visa either be detained or subjected to a program like the Trump Administration’s “Remain in Mexico” program;
- Defund local organizations and nonprofits who provide essential food, shelter and legal services to asylum-seekers; and
- Severely restrict the Administration’s ability to parole individuals into the United States, including ending the parole initiative for Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s unjust war.
