WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after House Republicans passed H.R. 2, the Child Deportation Act:
“I have long believed that Congress ought to come together to enact comprehensive, bipartisan legislation to fix America’s broken immigration system. The bill passed by the Republican House Majority on May 11, 2023 would only undermine that effort. Severely restricting legal pathways to enter the United States and reinstating indefinite detention for families and children who seek asylum, this legislation neither solves the challenges at our Southern Border nor does it create agreement to advance solutions.
“The end of Title 42 reminds us of the longstanding need for comprehensive immigration reform. Last Congress, I proudly brought the Dream and Promise Act to the House Floor, which would establish a legal pathway to citizenship for the millions of Dreamers and people with Temporary Protected Status and Deferred Enforced Departure who call America home. We also passed the Farm Workforce Modernization Act to fix our visa system for the migrant agricultural workers who help our farmers feed our country. Both commonsense measures received bipartisan support, yet sadly neither received enough Republican support in the Senate to become law. So here we are. Congress ought to continue pursuing these substantive proposals rather than indulging the partisan fearmongering that we have seen this week. I encourage our colleagues across the aisle to put aside these extreme policies and work with us to ensure that America remains a land of opportunity and inclusivity with border security.”
