WASHINGTON, DC – On May 16, 2023, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Chair of the Regional Leadership Council, tasked with spearheading implementation efforts among House Democrats, released the following statement on Infrastructure Week 2023:

“This week marks Infrastructure Week in the United States. As House Majority Leader last Congress, I was proud to help enact the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), the largest investment in our nation’s infrastructure in over six decades. Throughout this week, we ought to reflect on how that once-in-a-generation investment is already revitalizing our nation's roads, bridges, tunnels, ports, and more while also creating hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs in the process.

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has already spurred 32,000 projects across 4,500 communities. This includes 4,600 bridge projects, repairs on over 69,000 miles of roads, hundreds of airport terminals across 42 states, and 3,500 clean school and transit buses. Whether it's improvements for BWI Airport, funding for the new Frederick Douglass Tunnel, repairs on 273 bridges and 2,201 miles of our state's highways, or more affordable high-speed internet access for hundreds of thousands of Maryland homes, the BIL will also have a substantial positive impact on our state. Maryland has received $2.8 billion in federal BIL funding that will go to sixty-one different projects across the state. That number will only continue to grow in the years to come.

“Ultimately, this week is not only about investing in infrastructure; it's about Investing in America. Earlier this year, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries created the Regional Leadership Council (RLC), which I am proud to chair, in order to advance that mission. The RLC is composed of twelve Members – representing each of America’s twelve regions – who are coordinating with the Biden-Harris Administration and local stakeholders to make sure that policies like the BIL reach communities in every zip code across the country. Identifying opportunities, implementing these laws, and informing the public, the RLC will help show Americans how their tax dollars are making a difference in their lives and in their communities. Together, we will see to it that House Democrats continue to create new opportunities for people to make it Maryland and Make It In America."
