WASHINGTON, DC – On May 16, 2023, members of the Regional Leadership Council (RLC) and its Chair, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), met with U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm to discuss the implementation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law devoted billions of dollars to strengthen and expand America's power grid and to maintain and upgrade hydroelectric, nuclear, and other zero-carbon power plants across the country. In addition to lowering prescription drug and health care costs, the Inflation Reduction Act is bringing down energy expenses for the American people by making the largest investment in history to combat the climate crisis. From manufacturing new green technologies to introducing new climate-related tax credits, the policies in the Inflation Reduction Act will save Americans money, create new jobs, and help America fulfill its climate goals.
Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries created the Regional Leadership Council in January 2023 and appointed Congressman Hoyer to serve as its Chair. In addition to Congressman Hoyer, the council consists of twelve Members who each represent one of the United States' twelve regions. The council is working to ensure that Americans in every corner of the country and in every zip code can access the opportunities created by the historic polices that Democrats secured in the 117th Congress, including the American Rescue Plan, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the Honoring Our PACT Act, and many others.
"The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act will ensure that America remains at the forefront of the global effort to combat the climate crisis," Chairman Hoyer said after the meeting. "These laws are good not only for our planet but also for the American people. Whether creating new jobs to manufacture technologies like solar panels and electric cars, establishing green tax credits that bring down costs for Americans, or making our power grid more resilient against storms and other disruptions, these policies' positive effects ought to be felt in every community across the nation. I was pleased that the Regional Leadership Council could meet with Energy Secretary Granholm on May 16, 2023 to discuss how we can work together to ensure that these programs and policies reach Americans as quickly and efficiently as possible. Meeting amid Infrastructure Week 2023, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to deliver on the promises of the Investing in America Agenda not just this week but also in the months and years to come."
“It was a pleasure to join the Regional Leadership Council to discuss how the Biden-Harris Administration is securing our nation’s clean energy future through the Investing in America agenda,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “I look forward to our strategic collaboration on amplification and transparency, helping ensure the American people know exactly how these investments will lower their energy costs, bring jobs back to America’s shores and support safer communities.”
