WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House Energy and Commerce Committee on May 24, 2023 advanced a package of critical health care bills, including bipartisan legislation introduced by Congressmen John Sarbanes (D-Md.) and John Joyce, M.D. (R-Pa.) to lower costs for the Medicare program and its beneficiaries.
The legislation led by Congressmen Sarbanes and Joyce (H.R. 3237) would require hospital-based health care providers to use a unique identifier for each of their outpatient sites when billing the Medicare program, helping the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) improve oversight of the program. This technical change will give CMS the tools to better enforce existing law, increase transparency and prevent overbilling.
“I am pleased that the Committee advanced my legislation to help CMS assess the accuracy of claims and lower costs for seniors on Medicare,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “This small change will reshape the health care system and as we continue working to extend the solvency of Medicare, will strengthen the program throughout its lifetime.”
“Increasing transparency in medical billing is critical as we work to lower healthcare costs for the American people. This legislation will save taxpayer dollars while ensuring seniors are paying the appropriate amount for their medical care. I’m proud to see H.R. 3237 advance out of the Energy and Commerce Committee and look forward to its passage in the House of Representatives,” said Congressman Joyce.
