WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement oMay 18, 2023 on the passing of former Congressman Charlie Stenholm:

"I was deeply saddened to learn of former Congressman Charlie Stenholm's passing, and I join in mourning his loss. Charlie was a true Texan, a devoted public servant, a good friend, and one of the best Members I've worked with in all my time in the House of Representatives.

“Throughout his twenty-six years representing Texas' 17th District in the House, Charlie never lost sight of who he was: an honest, humble, and hardworking Texas cotton farmer. He was a crucial voice in Congress for fiscal responsibility and forging bipartisan consensus as a founding member and, in many ways, the spiritual leader of the Blue Dog Coalition. He helped build the Blue Dogs into an influential block within our Caucus, leaving a lasting legacy beyond his own tenure in Congress.

"Charlie's background not only informed his views of policy but also his approach to politics. Whether working within our Caucus or across the aisle, he always stood up for his beliefs without disrespecting the values of others. He based his arguments on his principals and on what he believed was best for his constituents and his country. Charlie never resorted to anger or resentment even when debate was lengthy and intense. Instead, he displayed the patience of a farmer waiting to harvest his crops. In these divisive times, Congress could use more leaders like Charlie.

"I extend my condolences to Charlie's wife Cindy; to his children Chris, Carey, and Courtney; and to the rest of his family and friends. May they take comfort in knowing that numerous Texans and Americans grieve with them."
