WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement on June 2, 2023 on the May Jobs Report: 

“The May jobs report released this morning shows our impressive economic recovery and steady growth continues. With another 339,000 jobs created last month, the total created since President Biden took office in January 2021 has reached a historic 13 million. More Americans are working today than at any point in our nation’s history, with the unemployment rate remaining near its record low. America's prosperous job market, healthy economic growth, and easing inflation offer us positive signs for our nation's future.

“Despite House Republicans’ attempt to hold the American economy as their 'hostage' by threatening to force our country to default on its bills during the past few weeks, our economy remains resilient. The Bipartisan Budget Agreement, although not perfect, will save America from a catastrophic default and allow our economy to keep growing. On Wednesday night, after Republicans failed to unite around the compromise that their leadership team came to with the Biden Administration, House Democrats stepped in to help pass the agreement with bipartisan support. Had we failed to act, Republicans' inability and unwillingness to govern would have caused irreparable damage to the American and global economies. Thankfully, we put an end to House Republicans’ brinkmanship and restored confidence in our economy, protected our creditworthiness, and ensured that this period of economic growth will continue.”
