WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement on June 24, 2023 one year after the Supreme Court decision Dobbs v. Jackson, which overturned Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey:
“One year ago today, six Republican-appointed Supreme Court justices played the role of lawmakers and turned back the clock on freedom and bodily control for millions of Americans by overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.
“As we feared, activists in states nationwide acted swiftly. Republican legislatures kept true to their promises, many banning abortion and advancing draconian laws significantly limiting access to health care. The results have been disastrous. We have seen clinics shutter in Republican-run states and doctors who provide life-saving care targeted, disciplined, or fined. In stark contrast, Democratic-led states like Maryland have moved to implement stronger protections for reproductive care, and the Biden-Harris Administration has taken action to protect a woman’s right to choose. I applaud the President’s Executive Order yesterday further strengthening access to contraception.
“Democrats remain united in our efforts to reflect the will of the majority of Americans who know that our Constitution guarantees women's reproductive freedom, even if those six Republican-appointed justices do not. Last Congress, the Democratic-led House passed the Women’s Health Protection Act repeatedly to codify the protections afforded by Roe. This year, amid Republicans’ attempts to pass a nationwide abortion ban, I was proud to join my Democratic colleagues in signing a Discharge Petition urging another vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act.
“Congress must act to protect the freedoms afforded to the American people by our Constitution. Democrats will not waiver in our work to protect the American people and enshrine the principles of Roe v. Wade in federal statute.”
