Washington, D.C. – On June 24, 2023, U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (MD-03) released the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned decades of longstanding precedent established by Roe v. Wade:
“Today marks one year since the Supreme Court’s drastic decision to strip women of their fundamental right to control their own health, lives and futures. Since then, women – especially women in low-income and minority communities – have been denied timely, lifesaving medical intervention due to dangerous and draconian laws that outlaw abortion in 14 states and heavily restrict it in many others,” said Congressman Sarbanes.
“Abortion remains legal in Maryland and I am proud that our state has taken several steps to strengthen abortion rights and increase access to comprehensive reproductive health care. However, we must keep pushing for protections at the federal level to ensure reproductive freedom for every individual, regardless of where they live.
“House Democrats refuse to back down from the fight for reproductive justice. I will continue to join my colleagues in advocating for policies – like the Women’s Health Protection Act – that reaffirm the constitutional right to an abortion and break down barriers to safe, effective and inclusive reproductive health services.”
