Washington, D.C. – On June 25, 2023, Task Force on Strengthening Democracy Co-Chair Congressman John Sarbanes (MD-03) issued the following statement on the tenth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Shelby v. Holder:
“Ten years ago today, the Supreme Court gutted essential provisions of the Voting Rights Act, weakening critical voter protections and opening the floodgates to Republican-led voter suppression laws nationwide,” said Congressman Sarbanes.
“The Shelby County decision turned back the clock on the decades of progress since Congress passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to address racially discriminatory practices that unconstitutionally infringed upon the right to vote. However, it also fortified the American public’s determination to expand access to the ballot box and shore up the foundation of our democracy.
“Every American deserves to have their voice heard by their government and the Democratic Caucus remains committed to comprehensive democracy reform. We must continue to fight back against extremist attacks on our democracy by passing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, along with other key measures.”
