Washington, D.C. – On June 27, 2023, Task Force on Strengthening Democracy Co-Chair Congressman John Sarbanes (MD-03) released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision on Moore v. Harper:

“The Supreme Court today resoundingly rejected the extreme independent state legislature theory, again making clear that state legislatures do not possess unchecked power to set rules for federal elections and that state courts have a critical role to play in maintaining the system of checks and balances that is vital to the strength of our democracy,” said Congressman Sarbanes.

“While today’s decision is an important victory for American democracy, our work to end partisan gerrymandering and uplift the voices of American voters continues.

“As Co-Chair of the Task Force on Strengthening Democracy, I remain committed to passing key measures – such as the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act – to end voter suppression, ensure fair redistricting in every state and secure every American’s fundamental right to vote.”
