WASHINGTON, DC – On April 24, 2023, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) issued the following statement marking Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day:
"Each year, we take April 24 to remember the 1.5 million innocent men, women, and children who were murdered in the Armenian Genocide. Persecuted, imprisoned, and eventually forced on death marches of a horrific scale, these victims perished in a systematic ethnic-cleansing campaign that became a template for similar atrocities throughout the twentieth century. For too long, even as countless Americans joined the Armenian community in solemn remembrance of this tragedy, our government failed to recognize what befell the Armenian people between 1915 and 1917 as a genocide. I was proud to work with Democrats and Republicans to push for that recognition, and I was pleased when President Biden issued America's official acknowledgement of the genocide in 2021.
"More than a century later, it is crucial that we lay to heart the painful lessons that the Armenian Genocide taught the world. We recall how demagoguery and prejudice foreshadowed these crimes against humanity. We remember how war served not only as a backdrop but as a pretext for these heinous acts. We reflect on how apathy and inaction often enable these human rights abuses. As we heed the warnings of the past, may we take this day to renew our commitment to promoting democracy, peace, and human dignity around the world."
