WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement on June 27, 2023 to mark the enactment of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act:

“For too long, pregnant workers have been pressured to leave the workforce because they are denied access to simple accommodations. This hurts the earning potential of America’s middle class, is a huge loss of talent for businesses across the country, and can be detrimental to the health of both mother and child. Today’s enactment of the Pregnant Worker’s Fairness Act (PWFA) is the first step to ensuring pregnant people in the workforce are offered the protections and accommodations all workers deserve.

“More than thirty years after I sponsored the Americans with Disabilities Act, I was proud to bring this legislation to the House Floor of the 117th Congress and work to help pass a landmark expansion of workplace rights. Millions of Americans will benefit from groundbreaking protections for pregnant, postpartum, and pumping workers who now have the right to reasonable accommodations at work. The PWFA gives workers the right to things like extra breaks, flexible scheduling to attend medical appointments, time off to recover from childbirth, light duty, remote work, and much more.

“By protecting the rights and safety of pregnant workers, we are helping working parents retain jobs and stay healthy. I look forward to continue delivering protections for the hardworking families of Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District.”
